Day 6: Spiritual Enlightenment by Joseph Robinson

William Hicks offered participants in Think Outside the Cell Week a fresh and proven way to tackle the daunting stress that is pervasive in prison: yoga.

William, a certified yoga instructor, said that he turned to yoga after a severe back injury left him nearly paralyzed and in excruciating pain. Since practicing yoga, he has not had any back problems.

He told the men that although yoga is associated with certain religions, it is not about religion but all about balance. It is a mental and physical discipline that has five principles: proper exercise, proper breathing, proper relaxation, proper diet and positive thinking and meditation.

He shared insights into the mind, body and soul connection that yoga stresses, and discussed the importance of living with purpose, surrounding oneself with positive energy and staying in touch with one's divinity. For example, every day should include prayer and meditation, as well as mindfulness about the Creator's blessings. Time should also be set aside for introspection.

With assistance from Reginald Parker, William Holmes and me, William taught participants how to breathe correctly and yoga's 12-step Sun Salutation. And ever mindful of what he views as his own blessings, he graciously presented me with a gift, "The Complete Illustrated Book of Yoga," to show his gratitude for the opportunity to share his knowledge with the men.

Those Think Outside the Cell Week participants who decide to practice yoga will be in good company. William said that among the many who embrace the discipline are mogul Russell Simmons and actress Phylicia Rashad.
